A sheet that fits a grown-up bed loosely is annoying. A crib sheet that fits loosely is a safety problem. On a baby's bed, fit is not about looks - a corner that pops off or a sheet that bunches is exactly what safe-sleep guidance warns against. This guide covers crib sheets and toddler bed sheets: the size a crib mattress actually is, why snug matters so much, and how to get a sheet made to fit yours when the standard ones do not.
What size is a crib mattress?
A standard full-size crib mattress in the US measures roughly 28 inches wide by 52 inches long, and no more than 6 inches thick. The good news for parents: a toddler bed is designed to reuse that same crib mattress, so toddler bed sheets and crib sheets are effectively the same size. Where fit goes wrong is with the beds that are not standard - many bassinets, mini cribs, cradles, and older or imported frames use their own dimensions.
| Bed | Typical mattress size | Sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Standard crib | 28" x 52" | Standard crib sheet |
| Toddler bed | 28" x 52" (same mattress) | Standard crib sheet |
| Mini crib | Around 24" x 38" | Custom fit |
| Bassinet / cradle | Varies widely | Custom fit |
Why a snug fit is a safety issue, not a preference
On an adult bed a loose sheet is a nuisance. In a crib it is a hazard. Safe-sleep guidance consistently says a baby should sleep on a firm, flat surface with a fitted crib sheet that fits tightly and nothing else loose in the bed. A sheet that is too big can work loose, bunch, or come off a corner, and that loose fabric is exactly what you are told to keep out of an infant's sleep space. So getting the fit right is not fussiness - it is the whole point of the sheet.
A quick check parents can do: pull up on each corner of the fitted sheet. If a corner slips off easily, the sheet is too loose for that mattress. It should take real effort to lift, and it should snap back into place.
When standard crib sheets will not fit
If you have a standard crib or a toddler bed, an ordinary crib sheet is the right call and there is no need to overthink it. But if the sheet keeps slipping, or your baby's bed is a mini crib, a bassinet, a cradle, a vintage frame, or anything with an unusual mattress, standard sizes will fight you. That is where a custom crib sheet, cut to your exact measurements, solves the problem for good.

How to measure a crib or toddler mattress
- ✓Width and length. Measure the bare mattress across and end to end in inches. Note it exactly, even the half inches.
- ✓Thickness. Measure the height of the side. Crib mattresses are thin, so the pocket does not need to be deep - it needs to be accurate.
- ✓Shape. Most are rectangles, but some bassinets are oval or hourglass. Note the shape so the sheet is cut to match.
Caring for baby bedding
Wash new sheets before first use, keep to a gentle warm cycle, and skip heavy fabric softeners that can leave residue on delicate skin. Cotton softens with each wash and holds up to the frequent laundering baby bedding needs. The routine in our sheet washing guide applies here too, just on a gentler setting.
A few common questions
Are crib sheets and toddler bed sheets the same size?
Yes. A toddler bed uses the same 28 by 52 inch crib mattress, so a standard crib sheet fits both. That is why you do not need to rebuy sheets at the toddler-bed stage.
How tight should a crib sheet be?
Tight enough that you cannot easily pull a corner loose. If a corner slips off with a light tug, the sheet is too big for that mattress and should be replaced with one that fits snugly.
My bassinet is an odd shape. Can I still get a sheet that fits?
Yes. A custom fitted sheet is cut to your exact measurements and shape, which is the reliable way to get a snug fit on a mini crib, cradle, or oval bassinet.
What material is best for a baby?
Breathable, soft, easy to wash often. Long-staple cotton fits that well and gets softer with washing, which is why the custom sheets are made in it.
